We hope to get some hens in the school in springtime. A henhouse has been constructed and is already on site and Davy is fencing at a furious rate before the hens arrive. Pupils in 5th class are forming a company to manage the operation and they hope to sell the eggs. We are very fortunate to have a number of pupil eggsperts in the class who are leading the class in finding answers to all potential obstacles to the operation. They will be approaching the Parent Association to pitch their business model and get some funds for their start up costs in exchange for shares in the company. An application has been made to the District Vet in Co. Meath for a flock number and we expect our premises to be inspected when the hens arrive. Negotiations are underway with local hen and feed suppliers for top quality stock and a preferential rate for supplies. We will be keeping a diary on all operations on the school website under the Gardening tab.
