Slane N.S boys have progressed to a gaelic football final for the first time in a number of years after a deserved victory against Robinstown N.S. in Wolfe Tones G.F.C. this week.
The teams had played each other earlier in the competition with Robinstown N.S. coming out on top by three points. The first half was very evenly matched. Despite having most of the possession, Slane were guilty of wides and balls dropped short but Tadhg Martyn, Oisín Mooney and Altay Guneyer helped steady the ship. Defensively, Slane players Lorcán Smyth, Ben McDonagh, Daniel O’Neill, Kevin Hevey, Josh Smith and Michael Leavey were excellent, limiting Robinstown to 1-02 by half time. Slane went in at the break leading by seven points.
In the second half, and with the aid of the breeze, Slane began to stretch the Robinstown NS rearguard. Ethan Harding, Alex Devin and Adam O’Sullivan worked extremely hard just before and after half time to supply ball to the full forwards and track back to defend. The blocking and marking from both sides was commendable but, ultimately, Slane NS had more to offer up front which made the difference.
The county final will be against Ballivor N.S. or Gaelscoil Thulach na nÓg, who play in the other semi final. The final date and location will be announced in two weeks time.
