We are very sad to report that Fr. Joe Deegan, our school Chairperson and local parish priest, will be leaving us permanently at the end of this month. He will be travelling to China to work with the Columban Fathers for one year, before returning to be assigned to a new parish.
Fr. Deegan has been in Slane for fourteen years and his can-do attitude, caring nature, great way with people and sense of humour have made him a very popular person in the community.
As school Chairperson and chaplain during that time, he has overseen preparation for the sacraments of Communion and Confirmation each year in St. Patrick’s N.S. His genuine interest in the pupils’ wellbeing, education and spiritual development have made him a much loved member of the school.
He has also overseen radical school building upgrades, including classroom refurbishments, the addition of an extra classroom, roofing and plumbing works and, most recently, the leasing of land by the diocese to the school for the provision of the school pitch and grass play area. The recent Department of Education Whole School Evaluation was also carried out in 2014 under his stewardship.
Fr. Joe will be greatly missed by the pupils and also the staff, with whom he has had a great rapport, most evident at staff nights out!
We wish him the very best in the months and years to come. Ádh mór leis.
