A State commemoration ceremony took place for Francis Ledwidge, the war poet, at his homeplace in Janesville, Slane last Saturday. The event was part of the planning of the local Commemoration committee to remember Ledwidge on the 100th anniversary of his death. Pupils in Fourth Class took part in a poetry competition for Northumbria University’s Ledwidge Centenary Event. The event is due to take place at the “Literary and Philosophical Society” in Newcastle. Pupils were asked to write a poem inspired by the life and poetry of Francis Ledwidge. Judges were extremely impressed by the entries received from Darcey Devlin, Cormac Redhouse, Senan Duffy and Michael Loughran. Pupils in Fourth and Fifth Classes were treated to a talk from Michael Moylan from Co. Kilkenny on the above topics as part of the Francis Ledwidge celebrations. It was very informative and the pupils got to dress up in all the clothing of the time, which made it very interactive!
