6th class pupils were very fortunate to get the opportunity to take part in the Bank of Ireland BizWorld programme. BizWorld workshops are delivered in the classroom over a two-day period by specially-trained BizWorld Ireland tutors. We had the pleasure of Leann and Brian, who were excellent as facilitators.
The workshops taught the basics of entrepreneurship, business and finance by showing how the entrepreneurial cycle operates. Working in groups of five, the pupils developed their own mini-enterprise, so they got a real feel for how a business operates / hands-on business experience.
Leann took the pupils through the entire entrepreneurial cycle – from company formation and applying for jobs in their companies, to market research, and then designing, producing and marketing their business idea.
They learned about pitching for investment and – to bring the workshop to another level – they were visited by Navan Bank of Ireland manager Alan, who played the role of venture capitalist and gave the pupils the opportunity to pitch, ‘Dragon’s Den’ style! He heard each company’s pitch and decided how much ‘BizBucks’ to invest in their company.
The pupils created products as diverse as Munch and Co. (dog feeding bowl and collar for individual dogs) , Digital Bakery (bakery online for customers to purchase cakes), Comfy Quake (earthquake proof bed!), Music Magician (music app to help understand different music pieces), Feed and Go (app to remotely feed your dog ) and Fresh (online clothing store where you can customise your clothes). Their hands-on experience culminated in the balancing of each company’s finance ledger after their companies were launched in the classroom on day two. We might be looking at some of their products on the shelves in years to come!
Many thanks again to the staff for working with the pupils and to Mr. Fagan for organising the workshop.
