5th Green Flag

Biomass

The theme for the Fifth green Flag is Biodiversity. As with the previous Green Flag themes,  biodiversity cross-cuts and integrates with the rest of the themes in many ways.

What is Biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the huge variety and variation of life that surrounds us.Biodiversityis essential in keeping the environment healthy and fit for human life. Not only do we rely on biodiversity but our activities also have an effect on it.So the Biodiversity Theme hopes to connect the school and the wider community with the natural environment and cultivate a sense of wonder, appreciation and value for all the biodiversity around us.

Where do we Begin?

1.  Analyse the situation - Where is biodiversity found around the school? Only when we have an understanding of biodiversity and developed a habitat map of the school grounds will we be able to make informed decisions about how to help biodiversity.

2. Devise an Action Plan
- Once we understand the concept of biodiversity and the importance of it we can think up ways that may encourage biodiversity and preserve it. We will have a brainstorming session where everybody comes up with lots of ideas.Out of this we will create our action plan which will  say what your targets are and how we are going to achieve them.

3. Measuring Success
– We must plan from the beginning how we will measure the success of our biodiversity action plan.We will have to judge if enhancements to our school have made a difference to the diversity of plant and animal species in our grounds from one year to the next.
