Just a short reminder for parents to discuss the following points with pupils in relation to social media.
The age restriction to join social media groups such as Facebook, Whatsapp and Viber is 13 and there is a very good reason for that, in that younger children are not expected to have the developmental maturity to interact in this manner until that age.
For parents who are happy for their children to access these communication forums, please ensure agreed rules and discuss interactions with your child regularly to teach them the etiquette involved. I would advise that if you permit your child to access these types of media while underage, that as parents, you should be checking the message content on a regular basis.
John Wills from Barnardos who gave pupils and parents a talk last year on cyber bullying explained that a message from one person to one other person of a defamatory or insulting nature in a group setting online constitutes bullying, as the message is seen by multiple people at the same time. This is an important message to discuss with your child.
Whatever happened to talking to each other?
