St. Patrick’s National School has been invited into the GLOBE air quality study for the second year in a row. Three test tubes have been placed around the school to record the levels of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), a gas that comes from the exhausts of vehicles. Pupils in 4th class will also be carrying out traffic surveys for the month.
When scientists measure the amount of NO2 at the end of the study, a low result would mean that we have very good clean air in our village and around our school and a high reading would mean that we have poor air quality and a lot of air pollution.
Last year, we recorded that outside our school had the highest level of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) for a school of our size in Ireland that was not in an urban area. The study results were part of our school’s submission to the national Roads Authority to support a bypass of Slane village. You can read the submission here https://www.slanens.ie/proposed-n2-slane-bypass-submission/
We will keep you informed!
