We have just bought a wormery for our school. Already we reduce green food waste in classrooms by feeding it to the hens. However, now we are also going to use a wormery to eat up all the green waste in the staff room each week.
Our wormery works like this:
1. We put coconut hair (coir) in water and then spread it on a tray in the wormery (it looks like Weetabix).
2. We add special worms called tiger worms in soil to the coir.
3. Then we add a layer of food waste on top (tea bags, apple cores, banana skins, coffee grinds, leaves etc.) on top of the worms. They move up to eat the food.
4. Finally, we add some moist shredded paper on top to keep the worms moist.
5. The lid goes on top and we let the worms do their business breaking down the food.
After a while all the food is broken down into soil, which we can put in our polytunnel, helping us to grow our vegetables and reduce waste.
This week, 4th class pupils studied worms, their life cycle and make up, as well as how valuable they are for the earth by eating deal plant matter.
