First and fourth classes were lucky to have a pollination workshop with Edel Heeran this week. Edel is a beekeeper and she spoke to the classes about wild bee species in Ireland, how they are in danger and what we can do to help them. 4th class were busy in the school garden this month starting to plant vegetables. We planted potatoes, carrots and lettuce. The potatoes were planted in our raised beds and the carrots and lettuce were started off in our new polytunnel. Skills focussed on were seed sowing in the ground, in module trays and seed potatoes planted into the soil. Fingers crossed for a good harvest.

Fourth class pupils walked up to Stanley Hill behind our school last week. The trip came after the class had read Francis Ledwidge’s poem “Stanley Hill” about his childhood memories of the hill, while fighting during World War I. We looked at digital maps of Stanley Hill today and how it has changed from the past.
