First and fourth classes were lucky to have a pollination workshop with Edel Heeran this week. Edel is a beekeeper and she spoke to the classes about wild bee species in Ireland, how they are in danger and what we can do to help them. Earlier this spring we cleaned out our pond. It was full of plants and their roots so frogs had stopped coming to lay their eggs. Now that it is clean, we needed some tadpoles to start the cycle again. Taking tadpoles or frogspawn from the wild is illegal in Ireland but teachers have a special licence to remove frogspawn and tadpoles for educational purposes. 4th class were busy in the school garden this month starting to plant vegetables. We planted potatoes, carrots and lettuce. The potatoes were planted in our raised beds and the carrots and lettuce were started off in our new polytunnel. Skills focussed on were seed sowing in the ground, in module trays and seed potatoes planted into the soil. Fingers crossed for a good harvest.
