This is our 7th year with hens and they still keep laying. The pupils formed a company many years ago called the “Gugalaí Gug Egg Company” and received a loan from the Slane N.S. Parents’ Association to build the henhouse, fence an area of the garden off and buy feed. The loan is long paid off. At the end of the year, pupils get to decide how their profit is reinvested in the school.
Our 5th class pupils have been trained up to manage our flock of school hens for this school year. Pupils work on a rota system every month to manage the flock of hens. They are in charge of cleaning, egg collection, sales, finances and stock control. The first group have been sending letters to families who want to buy eggs, cleaning the henhouse, gathering eggs and distributing eggs. Davy, our caretaker, keeps a close eye on quality control!
