Fourth class continued their air quality study around St. Patrick's National School this week. We carried out more surveys of traffic in the village. This time, there were an average of 66 vehicles passing our school in five minutes. We could not smell any fumes from the vehicles but any nitrogen dioxide coming from exhausts will be recorded in our test tubes, fitted on trees near the road.

We then had a look at the maple trees at the front of our school. Their leaves help to stop air pollution blowing into our school grounds but leaves are now falling off the trees, as the sap is dropping and the trees are becoming dormant. A leaf fight is also always a must in autumn.
Finally, on our way back to the class, we picked fuchsia flowers and sucked the bottom of the flowers for the sweet, sugary liquid that is at the base of the plant. It tasted delicious!
