4th Class History Trail to St. Erc's Cemetery

4th class visited St. Erc's cemetery last week as part of their outdoor learning lessons with Mr. Flanagan and Mr. O'Donnell.

The cemetery was named after St. Erc, a druid who was converted to Christianity by St. Patrick. He went on to become an Irish saint.

The pupils had a trail sheet to complete with tasks including estimating the length and width of the graveyard, finding the oldest gravestones and the types of materials used to make headstones. They also made some grave rubbings.

The visit is under the theme "What Lies Beneath" about things that we can't see under our feet in and around St. Patrick's National School. The visit also helps the children to connect with their locality and to pay respect to those who have passed away.
