6th Class Trip to Microsoft

6th class have been completing projects on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals this term. Pupils had to come up with four real world project ideas, based on the Goal areas, to promote sustainability. Each project had to include a digital device, called a Microbit.

The four projects that were designed were:

1.      Recording water temperature to highlight dangers of swimming in water at low temperatures. 16-24 degrees Celsius is considered the best range to swim in water.

2.      A drone seeder designed to plant seeds without creating a carbon footprint linked to heave farm machinery

3.      A bin buddy designed to sort waste from rubbish to improve recycling rates

4.      A method of recording water levels so that bathers and other water users would be aware to keep them safe in the water.

Early this week, the class travelled to Microsoft headquarters in Ireland in south Dublin to present their Microsoft Dreamspace projects. There were over 150 students there on that day and over 700 in total over the course of the week.

Groups waiting to present got to use the game room and afterwards, lunch was provided for all pupils. Finally, in the afternoon, there were talks on coding given by Microsoft staff.
