Environment for Sustainable Development Hen Company Training

Our school was fortunate to receive a grant from the Department of Education towards our school hen company. The grant provided money for the pupils to get some training in relation to caring for hens, understanding their life cycle and running a business.

As a result, both fourth class (who will be managing the egg company next year) and fifth class (who are currently managing it) travelled to Newgrange Farm to meet David Redhouse. David has a large farm beside the River Boyne. He has cattle, sheep, grows crops and also has a farm shop and tour available. David supplies our hens free of charge.

When the classes travelled to the farm, he talked about looking after hens, different breeds, what they like and don’t like, as well as things to watch out for when looking after them. He then passed around some two-week-old chicks.

After the talk, both classes got a tour of his farm to see everything that happens there. We are very appreciative of David and his staff for a great day out.
